Overview

Android Automotive OS is a full vehicle infotainment OS built on Android. Android Automotive OS brings Android into the cars through partnerships with automobile makers. Android Automotive OS allows automakers to customize and integrate Android into their vehicles easily. Working with Android Auto designers and external partners, I helped define a design system to help both Android Auto teams and external partners get ahead in their workflow. In addition, I also created documentation to give clear direction to design decisions, customizability guardrails, and safety guidelines for vehicles.

Process

I worked as the primary contributor on the Android Auto team to create our design system, collaborating with designers on the Android Automotive OS (AAOS) team to organize and propose new components. I refined and optimized base elements, components, and screens to build out the AAOS design system. Working alongside UX writers, I was able to create documentation to help designers from first-party and third-party partners, in addition to creating and maintaining a fully working Figma library for internal designers and external partners.

Results

The AAOS design system was an amazing success in creating consistency internally for our team when creating reference designs and prototypes as well as proving a starting point for car manufacturers to begin designing their versions of the AAOS experience. Alongside, the documentation helped provide research-backed safety guidelines when designing for driving as well as detailing design guardrails for optional and mandatory features expected to be included in the experience provided by the car manufacturers.
